Best fishing times based on Solunar tables. When to fish for catching more fish based on the moon and fishing.

By Steven Becker

Want to catch more fish? Learn how the moon affects fishing. Best fishing times are based on a calculatlion available in Solunar tables. These tables let you know when to fish based on the rise and set times of the sun and moon as well as the moon phase. Put all these variables together and you have the optimum times and days to catch more fish.

Fishermen and hunters have long known that fish and game are active at sunrise and sunset. These times are easily observable so tracking animal habits is easy. Moonrise and moonset are not as observable but have an equal impact on fish and game activity. It is debatable how much of an effect the moon has on fishing but there is no doubt that it has some.

Tides are important to ocean fishing. Fish are active and feeding when the water is moving. There is a noticalbe decrease in activity during the slack tide - midway between the high and low tides. Tide changes follow the moons rise and set. The moons rise and set are 50 minutes later each day. Tide charts are needed in addition to the solunar tables for saltwater fishing. Geography and underwater topography play a roll in when the actual high or low tide will reach a certain area. Often places only miles away will have an hour or more difference in tidal activity.

Days where the moon and sun rise and set within an hour of each other are thought to be the best fishing. The time window is about 90 minutes with 45 minutes before and 45 minutes after the event. Full moons and new moons bring more activity as well.

Full and new moons will increase fish activity. New moons and full moons on overcast nights are consistently better than a full moon on a clear night. When the sky is clear and the moon is full there is increased night time activity. Baitfish are illuminated and easy prey for game fish. This is especially true in the ocean with squid which become translucent and glow with a full moon. Fishing is often bad the following day as the game fish have eaten squid all night.

Keep a close eye on the moon and fishing success. Check you best fishing times before you go. By knowing when to fish your trips will be more successful.
