It is safest to go fishing with a partner, even if it won't exactly be the solitary, restful day you'd been hoping for. When you have an accident alone, it can quickly become an emergency.

Before you pull a fish in for the final catch, you should be sure to get your hands nice and wet. This keeps the fish's skin from drying out when you handle it. You should especially do this if you are practicing the catch and release method.

Smallmouth bass and walleye are often picky about live bait. You may even want to keep leeches handy. Leeches can be kept alive in a plastic container with some warm water.

You must make sure to have the basic essentials on you when you are fishing. These basics tend to vary, depending on where you go fishing. Items essential to every fishing trip include hats, sunblock, and sunglasses. If you will be fishing in a wild area, bring a compass, flashlight, and cell phone.

If you are discovering that you're losing many fish off your lure, then you probably need to thoroughly check the hooks. Dull or bent hooks can make it difficult to catch fish. You can keep your lures setting at their best by replacing old hooks with new ones.

If you take kids fishing, make sure to encourage them by offering praise whenever they catch a fish, even a small one. Although you may can catch extremely large fish, you must understand small kids are not going to be as talented as you are.

If you are wanting to rest while on a fishing trip, you should aim to take this rest during high noon. Fish are generally more cautious and do not bite as much when the sun is high in the sky. Set aside an hour or so to eat lunch, then resume fishing in less direct sunlight.

When you find a good spot, throw your cast upstream from it. This causes your bait and hook to move past the fish. The natural looking motion of the water going downstream will be more apt to fool the fish into taking a bite. For areas with an obstruction, this method is very useful.

Plan your fishing trip so that the time is right and the temperature will work in your favor. For instance, if you want to catch a bass or a large fish, you should wait for the morning or the evening. Smaller bait fishes are more active at these times of the day, causing larger fish to be in feeding mode. However, it is important to find a time when the water reaches at least 50 degrees so that the fish will be ready to take the bait.

How much experience you have at fishing is irrelevant. Regardless of how good you are at fishing already, you can enjoy this sport. Always learn more so you can better your technique and enjoy fishing for many years to come.
