Useful Hints To Catfishing In Ponds

By Greg Howlett

Cat-fishing in ponds is a fashionable sport and a handy way to catch a very nice dinner too!

The sport is open to anyone and to all ages who still enjoy this exciting and exhilarating life of the Catfish.

There are three species of catfish in most channels of water. There are the blue, channel and flat-head catfish and if you are looking for the most likely catfish to hook, then search no further than the channel.

They are amongst the smallest in relation to the other cats, and their hunting traits will lure them to your line with very little effort on your behalf.

These Channel catfish can also breed well in most catch-and-release situations, so your local reservoir will no doubt have them and will be a great starting point for you.

However, if you seek the monster cats, the other two catfish are the real winners and the ones to seek out and hook.

Be warned though that between the flat-head and the blue catfish, the second is by far the most difficult to catch.

Unlike the other two, the blue catfish has a particularly choosy appetite, so it is less mobile.

Useful Tricks to Catch the Cats

Anglers use many techniques whilst cat-fishing in ponds.

Unfortunately though, there are no guaranteed rules, so I've decided to give you the most basic ones, which can be applied to nearly every cat-fishing pursuit.

Avoid Making Unnecessary Noise

This hint not only pertains to cat-fishing but also to all outside fishing pursuits. If you make too much noise, you will come away disappointed

Therefore, the first and most important rule of all - remain silent.

Just because the Catfish are underwater, their smelling and hearing senses are top-notch, built to evade any possible danger.

Keep to the bank

To ensure there isn't any needless noise, stay on the shoreline and out of the water. Cast your bait to its maximum distance, making sure that your line gets to where the fish are hiding.

The majority of Catfish are deep dwelling fish, hiding at the bottom of the water, be it in a river, pond or lake.

This is why pro anglers will always recommend you cast your line to the center of the pond, and make sure that your line reaches the pond base where you'll find the best fish just waiting for you.

If the prime spot is near a bridge or other structure, the likelihood is you will discover your goal there.

Pond food Diet

If you are fishing for catfish in the daytime, the best places to find the fish are the regions with underwater plants or vegetation.

However, remember that catfish are usually night creatures, so it will remain hidden from fisherman during the majority of the daytime while making it a lot harder to catch.

The vegetation provide it with ideal protection from danger, as well as from your rod.

Experiment

Different types of ponds need you to try differing methods.

In other words, cat-fishing in ponds is not the same as in rivers.

To hook a cat, you will need to use trial and error, or better yet, ask the experts advice. Always remember to use the appropriate bait, too.
